2015 Season roaring to life!

It’s 2015 and everything is growing, including Morethana Farm. We are pleased to welcome Katy Craley to our management team.

We’ve doubled the amount of land tilled and are working to putting it into production. Here, Katy is checking the watering system for the first plants in the ground, squash transplants and corn seeds.

We‘ve expanded to include a partnership with another great organization, SAgE Farm. We teamed up with them to increase the manpower laying the foundation for their first high tunnel. They’ve come lend a helping hand with getting our tomatoes in the ground.

Saturday Morethana Farm Work day – OPEN TO THE PUBLIC – come join us!

We’ll meet at the farm anytime between the hours of 9:30 and 3:30 for some hands-on farm work winterizing the greenhouse and cleaning up the farm. This will also be a harvest day for the Bothell Community Kitchen. Volunteers should dress for drizzle and bring work gloves, water, and a snack.

Friday, October 17th and Saturday, October 18th
Drop-in anytime, 10am – 4pm

Cover-cropping and amending soil is a common practice in sustainable agriculture. We will be constructing test plots to measure Bio Char and Compost vs Agricultural Lime in our cover cropping system.

Actively participate by tilling-in soil amendments, hand-sewing vetch/rye/pea/buckwheat seed mix, and spreading a mulch of reed canary grass.

Preparing rows and transplant lettuce and kale for our food bank program.

Dress warmly and prepare for any weather. Bring gloves, water and a bag lunch.

Day of Caring with Volunteers from Microsoft

 

On September 19, we hosted Microsoft volunteers and families for Microsoft’s Day of Caring service day. We at the farm were grateful for the help with planting, soil sifting, and weeding. The volunteers appreciated the chance to get out the office and in touch with the earth.

We are happy to announce our new farm management trio consisting of Rod Crow, Rachel Ringdahl, and Perry Acworth. Perry is the newest member of our team. In this video, she talks about her vision for Morethana Farm.

Join Art Donnelly of SeaChar for a Reception in Tacoma and Demo at the Farm August 8-9

Join us for a reception and talk with Art Donnelly of SeaChar on August 8 in Tacoma. Art will be discussing his work with biochar in Costa Rica and at Morethana Farm on August 8.

On August 9 at noon, Art will be at 21 Acres for a to demonstration of biochar kilns, biochar processing, and biochar application. Please contact David McInturff for more info on both events.

Morethana Farm Awarded $10K!

Exciting news! We just found out that Morethana Farm was awarded $5,000 from Seattle Rotary’s Sustainability Committee and $5,000 from the Tamaki Foundation to support the continued development of the farm. It’s a great start to the rest of our farming year!

Saturday Workparty: 4/26 10am – 2pm

Join us this weekend for another Morethana Saturday work party, 10am-2pm! We’ll be sheet mulching, building shelves for the greenhouse, and preparing for spring planting. It’s a great way burn some calories and shake off the city for a few hours. Hope to see you there!

Greenhouse Building Workshop

Join us while we construct our first greenhouse thanks to a generous grant from the       Seattle Rotary. The fun starts on Saturday, October 19th at 9:00am.  We we be building both Saturday and Sunday. All are welcome to participate and learn.

BioChar Production & Application Class

Biochar July 13 Event Flyer

Art Donnelly of Seattle Biochar Working Group is teaching a one day class on the principles and practice of biochar production. Students will receive hands-on experience with our 55 gallon J/RO kilns and will perform several burns.
The afternoon session will include biochar sieving, inoculation, and instruction on how to apply it in soil.
Students should bring a sturdy pair of leather gloves and pack their own lunch. Students are also encouraged to bring some of their own dry feedstock with which to experiment.
